Site Collection Sizing Considerations

Bill Baer : Site Collection Sizing Considerations

Site collection sizing is an important consideration in an overall capacity planning and governance solution. This article details the considerations when planning for capacity and determining how site collections should be sized.

- SharePoint Administration Tool (STSADM)

The SharePoint administration tool, STSADM is most commonly used by SharePoint Products and Technologies administrators to backup and restore site collections or perform a variety of administrative tasks. Typically as the site collection size grows, the ability to use STSADM to backup and restore the site collection diminishes.

Performance issues, including unscheduled recycling of an application pool result in failure of the site collection backup/restore and are often the result of resource contention when a large amount of data is backed up; the specifications as provided with SharePoint Portal Server 2003 were 2GB (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889236). ...

B - Smaller Site Collections

Mauro Cardarelli : Backup Script for MOSS 2007

The script looks like this and is very easy to implement. Remember, check the date stamps on you files often to ensure that things are running successfully.

Backup Script for MOSS 2007 : As you have seen from previous posts, I am a big fan of Disaster Recovery planning. Having a good backup in place should allow you (and your business users) to sleep better at night... knowing that your SharePoint data is protected.

MOSS 2007 has some fantastic backup/restore functionality... but it still doesn't have a scheduler. However, it is possible, like with SPS 2003, to create a batch job to use the stsadm tool for a scheduled backup. My colleague, Nick Bisciotti, posted the script a few months back (site collection backup) so I refer you to his orginal post...

Download details: Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Sample: Example Master Pages

Master pages are a feature of ASP.NET 2.0 that work the same way in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 as they do in ASP.NET 2.0. Using master pages, you can create a single page template and then use that template as the basis for multiple pages in an application, instead of having to build each new page from scratch. Microsoft has made available a package of sample master pages compatible with the Application Templates for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to showcase some of the customization options master pages provide. The master pages were built using new CSS and Master Page editing tools within Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007.

SharePoint Products and Technologies Utility: Upgrade Pre-scan Tool

Un outil pour la migration :

Before you can upgrade to Office SharePoint Server 2007 or Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, you must run the Prescan.exe utility against your existing Web sites. This pre-upgrade scan tool scans your sites and reports issues, allowing you to fix any errors before you perform an upgrade. If you have not successfully run this tool and you attempt to upgrade your environment, when you attempt to run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration wizard, the wizard will exit and prompt you to run the tool. We highly recommend that the server administrator run the pre-upgrade scan tool before the upgrade and resolve any problems that can be resolved before scheduling the upgrade. For more information about upgrade, migration, and using the Prescan.exe utility, see the Microsoft Web site.

Autonomy Web Parts Suite

"Customer Challenge. Organizations utilizing Microsoft’s SharePoint 2003/2007 and Autonomy’s IDOL Search engine do not have access to the Autonomy Search Engine from within the corporate portal site. Currently, the only option is to use an unfamiliar and complex external application to query corporate data sources. The integration of these two products would create more efficient access to corporate related data.
Business Challenge. Organizations need the ability to utilize the powerful features of Autonomy’s IDOL Search engine from within SharePoint 2003 and SharePoint 2007 Portal Servers. The integration of Autonomy’s ability to automatic categorize, tag, link, retrieve and profile all forms of unstructured information with Microsoft’s SharePoint 2003/2007 collaborative capabilities would allow corporate data provision to be more streamlined."

Complete reference of all STSADM operations (with parameters) in MOSS 2007

I was looking for a specific action under "STSADM -o spsearch" and I noticed that there is no way to get those details unless you're in front of a MOSS 2007 server.

So I decided to do a little scripting to get the list of all commands for STSADM including the options and parameters for each. I edited the resulting file and it did not come up as long as I thought it would. So, here it is: a complete reference of all STSADM operations in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

Please note that some defaults might be related to the way my server is configured. I hope it helps someone just trying to find if that option is there or not... Jose Barreto's Blog

Dragan's blog article on SDK WSSv3

Dragan's blog
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS) together with Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS) makes one very powerful platform. Because of very tight integration with ASP.NET 2.0 all good feetures of that platform are simply integrated in MOSS based sites. On the other hand, some times MOSS can be quite difficult to customize, especially to beginners in SharePoint world (like myself). There are some very good blogs on the Internet that SharePoint developers can use during development process, but finding right information can take very big amount of time. But, there is one very valuable resource that can be found on MSDN - WSS SDK that contains very good reference of basic classes included in WSS 3.0 - and MOSS 2007. This is (and should be) mandatory part in literature that every SharePoint developer should use during development. Besides explanations of every part of WSS architecture - Lists, Libraries, Web parts, Features (and so on) there is comprehensive set of HOWTO's and complete reference of classes included in WSS. SDK can be accessed online and downloaded for offline usage in CHM format.

Add Command Line Shortcut to "12 Hive"
Don’t just create a shortcut to the 12 Hive (the directory where just about everything WSS v3 is installed) on your desktop/Quick Launch. At first I created a mapped network to the “12” directory location [not very secure].

When you're in a command prompt, sometimes you need to navigate to the 12 Hive directory. But no one wants to type the directory path to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12. Wouldn't it be easier if you could just type the following to get there?
