One of the big limitations in analyzing data within a SharePoint site is the apparent inability to create dashboards from data within a site. In this screencast, I demonstrate how calculated columns might be used to present information in a graphical format without the need for third party web parts.

Notes about SharePoint Service Pack 2 - Chandima.Net Blog for SharePoint solutions

Notes about SharePoint Service Pack 2 [ Posted on: 10-June-2009 ]

Well it’s been a while since I’d been able to blog. With my full time job and also organising the first ever New Zealand SharePoint Conference it has been quite busy. If you still haven’t registered and you have an interest on learning and networking with some of the best in the SharePoint world then this is your opportunity! (Plug over)

Well now Service Pack 2! Yes that was released some time ago. And if you are still wondering what to do or worst still haven’t even updated your servers to Service Pack 1 then it’s time to do so. If you haven’t read my previous post about updating your servers I recommend that you read this post titled “SharePoint Service pack 2 is coming are you ready?” Microsoft recommend that Service pack 1 plus post SP1 updates as a minimum. My post highlights how you should go about applying the updates and getting your deployment ready. If you haven’t updated to SP1 then you can also go directly to SP2. Please refer to the official FAQ provided by the SharePoint Team.

You can download the Service Packs from the following locations.

Before you go about installing please be aware about the following issue and how to overcome this. Basically once SP2 is applied you may experience that your server goes into the 180 day trial mode. The symptoms and a workaround is available here > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971620. Note that this effects only existing SharePoint Server builds only and does not affect Windows SharePoint Services.

Also there is no SharePoint Server (MOSS) slipstream build available for new server installs which include SP2. However you can create one by extracting the SP2 files.

Installation Steps for Service Pack 2

To keep all the files in a SharePoint installation up-to-date, the following packages need to be applied on all servers in the farm. Service Pack 2 contains all fixes released through February of this year, so customers can install it directly on RTM build of the products.

  1. Service Pack 2 for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
  2. Service Pack 2 for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Language Pack (if applicable)
  3. Service Pack 2 for Office SharePoint Server 2007
  4. Service Pack 2 for Office SharePoint Server 2007 Language Pack (if applicable)

After applying the preceding updates, run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard or "psconfig –cmd upgrade –inplace b2b -wait” in command line. This needs to be done on every server in the farm with SharePoint installed.  The version of content databases should be 12.0.0.6421 after successfully applying these updates.

Installation Recommendation for a fresh SharePoint Server that is being deployed

The following install order is recommended in order to keep all files up-to-date.

  1. Service Pack 2 for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
  2. Service Pack 2 for Office SharePoint Server 2007
  3. April Cumulative Update package for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
  4. April Cumulative Update package for Office SharePoint Server 2007

Please note: Starting from April Cumulative Update, the packages will no longer install on a farm without a service pack installed. You must have installed either Service Pack 1 (SP1) or SP2 prior to the installation of the cumulative updates.
